Rio de Janeiro Carnival 2013

This is the time of year travelers from all across the world flock to the streets of Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paolo in Brazil, to be a part of samba-dancing crowds, bikini-clad Brazilian beauties and people in outlandish costumes.

Rio's famed Carnival was kicked off by the portly King Momo - the event's mascot (of a sort) under a stream of confetti and with lively music. The event also consisted of the first of many traditional parades through the city's Sambadrome.

Thousands, many wearing costumes, danced as live bands on lorries played tunes of traditional carnival songs and samba school themes.

More than a million people are expected to be on the streets, soaking in Brazilian culture in its most colourful and liveliest forms. The Carnival is staged across the country, including cities like Salvadore, Recife, Olinda, Manaus and Porto Alegre.

The local flavour of every Rio Carnival is provided by legions of Samba schools. These organisations train and create dancers and floats, with each representing one neighbourhood of the city. The annual Samba parade is a competition that demands an incredible amount of hard work and preparation, with the final few months leading up to the Rio Carnival almost exclusively given to rehearsals.
